Stuffed Bread

My friend Liane gave me this recipe many years ago. It is one of my boys’ absolute favorites. If I fix it for a party, I have to make enough to ensure leftovers or leave enough back to make another loaf the next day. Pairing it with potato soup makes a delicious meal!

This is a German recipe. The bread over there is a bit different than what we can get in the US. Sour dough from your local bakery is as close as you will be able to find.

If your children are doing a project on Germany for a geography fair and need a food to share, stuffed bread is perfect. We’ve served it twice, once at a geography fair and once for a group of homeschool friends that wanted hear about our trip to Germany & Austria. It was a huge hit both times.

3 boiled eggs, chopped

1/2 pound ham, finely chopped

1/2 cup mayonaise

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon mustard

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 loaf sourdough bread

melted butter

Preheat oven to 450.

I chop the ham in my food processor.

Combine eggs, ham, mayonaise, lemon juice, mustard, salt, pepper, & onion powder. Spread on bread slices. (I assemble the loaf on a sheet of foil.) Brush top of loaf with butter. Wrap in the foil. Bake for 15 minutes.
