Fun Sleepover Activity

Does your child want to have a sleepover, but you don’t relish the thought of kids running through your house all night? A fun & easy activity to keep the kids busy is letting them decorate cakes. And no experience is necessary! For the kids or you.

Buy a few decorating tips & disposable decorator bags at your local craft supply store, bake a couple of cakes, make some frosting, & let the fun begin.

I baked mini cakes for my daughter & her bff to decorate. I found the pans cheap at thrift stores. In the past, I have also used disposable foil mini pans in different shapes that I found at the Dollar Tree. If you can’t find mini pans, bake a 9×13 cake & cut it into half or fourths or bake 2 9″ round cakes. No matter which way you go, one cake recipe is more than enough for two children. A single recipe my devil food’s cake yielded 2 mini doll, 4 mini hearts, 2 mini bears, 1 mini star, & 1 mini bunny. The mini doll cakes are made using the mini wonder mold & dolls from Wilton.

With this being an activity for kids, you will need at least a recipe & a half of frosting. I recommend the decorator’s buttercream recipe from Wilton. It uses half butter & half Crisco. If you use all butter, your frosting

will be too soft to hold much of a shape. Personally, I don’t care for the taste of it, but, if you want stiffer frosting, use all Crisco.

A single recipe is:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • dash of salt

Alternate extract ideas:

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla & 1/2 teaspoon almond
  • 1 teaspoon lemon
  • 1 teaspoon coconut
  • 1 teaspoon orange

Divide frosting into bowls & tint with colors of your choice.
